Have you ever known a person who went to an Ivy but ended up having a bad life?

Yep, it’s totally possible to go to an Ivy and not have a good life. Walk around Harvard Square, and you can meet some of the unluckier graduates – assuming they stay focused long enough to have a conversation.

Ivies give you a lot of tools to succeed – good professors, research opportunities, professional connections – but they don’t guarantee success. You have to take those tools and make them work for you.

Yes or no?

No I had a friend that had almost straight F’s in high school, he didn’t graduate. Got his GED a few years later. Went to community college, and got into UC Davis. SAT scores and good grades in high school don’t usually determine your success in life. They do however say something about the individual, and if they don’t change their act they will spend the rest of their life working for Walmart. I say this because if you tried to get a blue collar job that made decent money you would need to go to trade school, and most trade schools will not let you in if you don’t pass arithmetic test’s and other such testing. But if you want to go to Yale, Harvard or Cambridge, I would imagine you would have to worry about your grades from 7th grade. LOL Hope that helps.

Edit – Especially those successes which are difficult to quantify. Like what would be criteria of successful marriage ? When would you say you are successful doctor ? How would call yourself successful housewife ?

In my opinion, results as viewed and measured by self standards lead to the perception of achievements…… success, however, needs to be judged as viewed and measured by others around us (unless we can be totally indifferent to the norms and ideas set by them which is a utopian ideal for self satisfaction, almost impossible to attain while living in the society). The norms and ideas set by others in order to define success are not mathematical equations because success is a relative concept within the boundaries of a family or community or nation as the case may be. In that sense, what you say is absolutely right…. it is difficult to ‘quantify’.

Nevertheless, there is usually a reasonably well defined set of criteria to judge success, which would obviously differ in different cultures and societies, but is nearly unmistakable within a given culture or society because this is driven by the relative status of the members in the given culture or society, which remains fairly easily definable through customs, practices and relative attainments of the members in the given set up. Thus, in the Indian society, going by the traditional norms, a successful marriage is simply decided by the couple having lived together forever raising a few healthy, well mannered and reasonably well to do children whereas in a western society, one would more importantly talk about how equally balanced they were with each other both in respect of rights and responsibilities. What I mean is that the criteria need to be what are generally accepted and approved in a given society in line with its values and aspirations and these may not be quantifiable, but are reasonably clearly discernible when viewed and weighed through the collective eyes of the society as fairly consistently reflected by its reflections and reactions to different situations and individuals.

The above may look a bit vague to a mathematical mind, but I think it is as specific and well defined as anything relating to human psychology and behavior can be. Success is a psychological or behavioral judgment and not a mathematical or scientific evaluation….. the logic is not absolutely irrefutable, but it is firm and uniformly applicable within a given framework of time and context.

I want to know the answer to this question as often because we attribute a lot of importance to success, we do not accept a change, howsoever critical and needed, because we do not see success in it. So I want to know, why is success so important in life?

At its basic level it is mere instinctive means of survival and self preservation.
When a lion chases a deer, it means life to either of them.
The lion faces starvation or the deer faces death, due to failure of either.
We as evolved beings try for a win-win situation, were we preserve the species that gives us food, life, and sense of security.
From this basic level, we try to stipulate various parameters for higher benchmarks of successes.
Thus two types of performers spring up. Those who succeed for their own purpose, and those who succeed for others.
Some of those who succeed for their own purpose at time also happen to contribute that success directly or indirectly for others. Like some scientific invention. But wealth gathering success may not contribute much.
Those who succeed for others have a larger Definition of ’self’.’ They may include the country as a part of themselves. That is how unsung heroes succeed.
Success is like a catalyst or a lubricant, that accentuates the attitude towards ‘life-positive-mode’(away from life-negative-mode).
The youth get confused when some of the definitions of successes prescribed by elders around seems narrow, self-centered, personal-gains-oriented etc.

Oh heavens no. If that were so we might as well as turn in our life badges. Experience, acceptance, fearlessness, open-mindedness, knowledge, friendship, love – those are more about what life is. Success in the grand scheme of things, is nothing if you haven’t lived.

By success in high school I mean academic success (high grade point average and high test scores).

Do you guys think that students who get the highest grades in high school and graduate top of their class will eventually go on to become CEOs, Doctors, and Presidents tomorrow?

When I was in the 9th grade, my literature teacher passed around his report card for everyone to see. He was a straight A student in high school but yet at the end of it all, he was a literature teacher who ended up making less than average. The teacher was a good person but he lived in a broken down home and he drove a torn down sedan.

Moral of the story is that high school is just one step of life. Doing good in high school only gives you some opportunities early in life but going to Harvard won’t instantly make you into a CEO or a heart surgeon, you still need to work hard for those jobs. Going to Harvard will give you a better chance of becoming a CEO but you will need the drive and the work ethic to make your goals come true. High school does not measure or predict success in life because life is too complex for grades and SATs to determine who would make more money. Not to mention the disparity between high schools, one can be tough as nails while another easily gives its student grades.

I went from being a corp slave (Mgr) to consulting and although it was scary because of no guarenteed income, I’ve been successful way beyond my expectations and actually make more money, work a lot less, and have less responsibility. I had a severence early on and some work back with my company but it was still nerve racking until I got established. But I mostly love it and have turned down several job offers from clients. Now that my kids are grown, I have no qualms in traveling all over the US and canada for work.

I guess what I mean is, do other members look out for each other especially and try to help each other succeed in their careers, etc.? I hope this question makes sense, ha ha.

That place creeps me out theres a Freemason club in the main street here and I always used to look in the gate when I was a little kid and the courtyard looked like something from Harry Potter =S I have no idea what they are or even do though… As far as I know a Freemason is someone who works with stone.
