Do this now to overcome limiting beliefs

We’ve all felt stuck

Have you ever felt paralysed with a limiting belief or unable to motivate yourself to move forward? Not taking action was one of my regrets over the past few years.

This could for something that is as simple as deciding the path forward for a personal project you’re working on. Or for something that might change the trajectory for your life.

You’re not alone if you feel this way. We all get the sense that we’re not good enough.

Or that we somehow are not worthy of being that person that goes after what they want.

I created this video to help those who feel like they’re being held back. Not by anyone else, but by your own thoughts and emotions.

Check it out below:

What is a limiting belief?

A limiting belief is simply a thought or belied that holds you back. It’s a story that you’ve told yourself that your brain accepts as its truth.

Most of them come from:

  • Past failures
  • Other people’s opinions
  • Comparison (to others or the version of you that you’ve idealised)
  • Fear of rejection of embarrassment, or
  • One moment that got overgeneralised.

A limiting belief is simply something that you’ve taken as evidence of something that is real in your mind, but not in reality.

Once you understand this, you stop arguing with yourself and start questioning the story. It moves you to action.

Limiting beliefs impedes impact

Imposter syndrome is something that is very similar to a limiting belief. In fact, it’s the physical manifestation of the belief that acts to sow doubt in our mind’s ability to act.

It also prevents us from visualising ourselves in positions of success. It prevents us from realising our potential. However, most importantly, imposter syndrome impedes the positive impact we can have on the world.

Overcoming limiting beliefs in your career

Let’s say you’re a manager at any company – large or small. You may have a limiting belief where you tell yourself that you’re unable to perform to the expected level. Or that you don’t have what it takes to be effective in your job.

Now just imagine if you could overcome that? Imagine what that would do to your confidence and performance in your job. It would be an absolute superpower!

So how do you overcome this limiting belief? Well, you just need to act. Overthinking is the enemy of productivity, and sometimes it’s our own worst enemy.

Overthinking takes away your energy and restricts your ability to get anything done.

How I overcame limiting beliefs

So how did I overcome limiting beliefs? Well I just took action – I look out the camera and started recording my first video. See below.

When it came time to go for that promotion, I wrote down my achievements and I presented to my manager. Sometimes it took a few conversations, but you just have to get the ball rolling.

Taking action was one of the best things I could have done. In my career and personal life.

Belief and action are a powerful combination

Sometimes action is not enough. We all need some belief that things will work out. That’s why I’m telling you that sometimes you need to believe you can do it, before you actually do it.

If you remember back to when you were younger, when you were learning how to ride a bicycle, or learn how to swim. Did you know what to do the moment you sat on that bike, or jumped into the swimming pool?

We’re not born with these abilities. Far from it. We need to be taught – but believing we can do it helps us get a start.

In the same way that when you get a new job, you don’t necessarily know how to do the job, you just have the belief that you will know what to do (after being taught, and with some practice and experience).

Belief is incredibly important. It’s a key enabler to overcoming limiting beliefs.

Your opinions and beliefs matter to the world

In combination with beliefs and actions, your opinion matters more than you know. If you’re struggling with getting your YouTube channel going, then understand that your opinion matters and that it’s worthy of sharing.

You must remember that when you create videos, you’re not creating them for yourself. You’re creating them for the people that are interested in being where you are or learning about your area of expertise.

While it may not seem interesting to you (although you should be interested in it!), you would be surprised to know that you’re experiences, and know-how are incredibly interesting to others.

Another personal example. I’m really passionate about what it takes to be a great consultant, or how to achieve financial independence. While these things are topics that energise me, they may not be interesting to everyone. In the same way, you get the best outcomes where you align your passions with topics that other people are also interested in hearing about.
